Another thing coming

On Friday, I think, no, on Thursday, I decided to go check nathar-nimhe again for the first time in forever. First, I re-read some old fic ideas, of which I have completely forgotten only one! (that I have now deleted), then I re-read my fics there -> liked the one with Miriel as High Queen in Beleriand -> went 'why don't we write the whole Dagor Bragollach with Miriel there as High Queen'?

After I finished my cleaning routine, I went and re-read the first couple of pages of the chapter about the battle, then I set to writing in the night and went to bed at 3:00 AM (F).

I guess I like the idea of moving every character about as a chess piece, finding a place and a role for everybody etc.

I also downloaded maps (I had never saved Tolkien maps on my PC before, iirc), particularly Beleriand+rest of ME map (for me, it's sort of mind blowing that Ost-in-Edhil is about paralled to the southermost river in Ossiriand, I guess I always imagined Beleriand to be further up north?); I read wikis (and thus (re-)learned where exactly Maglor was situated in the FA LOL. I knew vaguely where he was, but I wouldn't have been able to say exactly between the two branches of the Gelion); I asked Google questions (not relevant to this story, but just how far was Valmar from Tirion?).

Canonical deaths during the battle still happen, Finrod gets captured as in my old drabble, and others are gravely wounded. (I'm only talking about Elves here, because I've never kept tracks of humans.)

The problem? The problem is that, as always, my imagination took a leap of faith that my writing ability has a hard time keeping up with.

And so the number of characters increased, and also the number AU elements and of things to write.

What a decade

I failed to remember earlier but this year marks ten whole years since I created my AO3 account and started posting fic.

I've not been active at all, of course, for a long long time, but every once in a while I do log into eldvarpa and check things (so I know I have a ton of comments to reply to...). My favourite ship tags are still kinda bare. *sigh*

Lately I've also started re-reading my own fics. Some I didn't even remember writing! Some (mostly the oldest ones) saw my English falter a lot (which is understandable), and I do plan to fix that (leisurely, I'm not gonna dive in and correct every unidiomatic bit of English at once). Some are actually really really good, if I say so myself. Like Orcs' Brew, I love that fic!

Actually I started thinking about Orcs' Brew again after that one thing with the RoP orcs (which was hilarious, ngl) - it reminded me that I had a whole backstory in my mind about the orcs that follow Maedhros (very much unwillingly at first, there was a lot of torture involved), which I did hint at in the fic, but I would have loved to expand on it.

Skill + magic

You know how "curu" means skill, but earlier on it meant also:

Q. noun. skill, *[ᴱQ.] magic, *wizardry

@@@ more accurately what men would might “magic”, but to the Elves including what is to them ordinary skills such as mental communication and powers of foresight

Root "KUR" = “have power, strength, ability inherent physically or mentally, skill, *[ᴹ√] craft”

Saruman is still called Curumo in Quenya and Curunír in Sindarin.

And also curuvar means "wizard" in Quenya, whereas curuni means "witch".

Now, Fëanor's inventions are generally based on skill that falls into the realm of (elven) Science, but things like far-seeing stones and the Silmarils could have more of a magicky element to them.

Canonically, Fëanor made the Silmarils with his "lore", "power" and "subtle craft". A certain degree of magic could definitely feature both in lore and power (power of words and all that) and I guess in subtle craft, too, especially the "subtle" part.

So why can't we have Fëanor and sons as actual witches? And yes I do mean witches not wizards, with all the (human) connotations the term has, and also in terms of like, gender shenanigans (esp. in the case of Curufin or things like:
Numenorean scholar: sons of a witch (pejorative)
Random human: oh you mean their mother was a witch?
Numenorean scholar: no no, their father was
*Confusion ensues through the centuries*)

Idk, I feel it would be possible to come up with something pretty phenomenal from this sort of premise - both wild AUs and overall canon compliant stories - if fandom weren't so busy depicting the Fëanorians as weepy repentant wimps who are so weak in the face of any enemy (eyeroll).

Fëanor burning out of his body could mean so much more.

Or maybe Tevildo was none other than witch!Curufin or witch!Celegorm but human chroniclers ended up making a mess of the story (I've never read the Tevildo tale so idk actually if this could work).

Maglor may be singing his sorrow to the wind but that's just one huge spell that will have people miss the good ol' days with Sauron.

Etc.

No Cats in Heaven, No

So I've been thinking of Daughters of Fëanor a lot again. Specifically fem!Celegorm, who I think is my favourite after fem!Curufin and fem!Maedhros.

But yeah I've been imagining a reunion between Celegorm and Maedhros after Nargothbleah in the Orcs' Brew* verse, when Celegorm has to tell Maedhros about the whole 'Finrod forced a child on me' incident, though it would not be all (or even mainly) about that, more about them just being close after being apart for so long, and Maedhros admiring Celegorm's physical strength - Celegorm is almost as tall as her and strong, as her father-name implies, and Maedhros just feels comforted by Celegorm's presence...something along those lines, hence they spend a lot of time together bathing, massaging each other, drinking, talking of course.

Maedhros has very much accepted her mutilated body (I didn't mention this in Orcs' Brew but she had her breasts cut off after she was brought back - they were mangled anyway, but it was mainly sending a message and actually giving herself a blank slate to start over from), being with Celegorm makes her wish she could go back but then again she was never as much of a walking wall of muscle as Celegorm is. (Celegorm is in fact so beefy that it's actually understandable that people (especially filthy humans) would assume she's a guy. Mr. Favoritism probably never even took into consideration the fact that Celegorm is very much a woman.)

Maedhros is of course angry to hear about Gil-Galad's birth, especially because it reminds her of her own experience with Fingon (Fingon never tried anything sketchy but he did expect her to be desperate enough and thankful enough to finally marry him after Thangorodrim. Cue breast-cutting - 'oh dear, looks like I'm really unfit for any of your marriage shit' was part of the message too).

Also...the huge physical difference between Celegorm and Curufin? Curufin still embodying androginy as a woman and really confusing people. She's petite (as male!Curufin is small), but well-built and muscled (as male!Curufin), looks exactly like her father and is still called Little Father.

I'm also leaning towards her never being married, and not even being 100% sure who Celebrimbor's dad is, which causes of course a lot of Respectability(tm) issues. (The idea of a fake marriage was probably taken into consideration at some point, but her dad didn't want her to end up in a marriage she didn't care about that would be a shitty binding thing according to the Valar's laws.)

I should really focus on the twins too...

And my fem!Caranthir should def be different from the one in Tangled.

Fem!Maglor is basically the same as regular Maglor (maybe with a bit of androginy here too).

*If I were to make this into a series, I'd change all the titles to lines of a certain song (and No Cats in Heaven would be the series' title).

Meh

Writing fic for Silm fandom feels 100000% pointless when you don't like any of the major tropes and can't be active enough on social media because it would kill your soul.

Fic Titles

All those juicy juicy song lyrics/game quotes I'll never be able to write fic for:

- Your hands as pale as ash
- Weightless fall, honeysuckle (actually I know what fic this might be for - a not-so-happy Celebrimbor/Curufin fic I started three years ago...)
- The Curse that Binds us
- All for one with one iris
- Never stop clawing at the light (argh, I like this one so much)
- As ashes will be: ever seeking fire
- (Yes,) as a burner of worlds should
- Devourers of Gods (this too has a prompt attached to it)
- Silk and Song

Fic Ideas

I haven't written anything this month (apart from tinkering with old fics/drafts) and I don't think I'll be writing much this year. So I thought I could just as well make a list of (most of) my fic ideas that will very likely never be written. They might not be actual stories to read but they have a lot potential all the same. I put all the incest stuff at the bottom in a separate list. (Might be a post in progress)

Also, if anybody wants to write any one of this ideas, do get in touch!

ETA 11/10/2024 Shit I forgot so many of these.

We were sent here to die, but we persevered

Very last fic for this year, because I needed High Queen Míriel in Beleriand making things even more complicated.

Rating: Teen
Words: Around 930
Pairing: Fëanor/Míriel
Content Warning: nothing apart from the incest and Míriel being even less diplomatic than Fëanor ('cause we know she was)
Summary: High Queen Míriel gets news about the war, but is more interesed in her dinner (and her son).

But I'll worship true

I was like 'let's write a short scene from this AU I have in mind'. Sadly AU doesn't work without a ton of explanation and notes.

Rating: Teen
Words: Around 1100
Pairing: Gildor/Maedhros (also consider FëanorianOT8 & FëanorianOT8/Gildor in the background)
Content Warning: AU, slight hint of NSFW tentacle sex, Fëanorian!Gildor, body horror?/monster bodies
Summary: Maglor and Gildor visit Maedhros

EDIT 07/10/19: I just recalled that Urloth wrote an awesome Fëanorian!Gildor (son of Celegorm) which is probably where all my Fëanorian!Gildors come from.

Mother's Sugar

Another fic I meant to write earlier on during this holiday season. Didn't edit it too much, will probably hate it when I re-read it.

Rating: Teen
Words: Around 1560
Pairing: Finwë/Fëanor
Content Warning: Underage, very slightly* fucked-up dynamics (*that depends I guess), a bit of crossdressing
Summary: After Fëanor is away from home for a couple of years, Finwë can no longer keep his feelings in check.
